Recently I taught a story skills workshop. We delved into a 7-element story structure that sets up a beginning to establish a routine, a conflict that breaks the routine, a climax that resolves the conflict, and a resolution. It’s a practical tool you can use to convey a story anytime, anywhere, in any setting, for any purpose. Guaranteed.

One of us remarked that a “one-size fits all” framework was dubious at best. Think about it. We have a fixed number of musical notes and yet we create whole symphonies. We have a fixed number of vowels and consonants and yet we create whole languages. A story depends on a structure like your body depends on your bones. What makes the same story different is the teller’s interpretation; that’s what brings it to life. You interpret the story. You give it meaning. You say what it’s about. Otherwise, it’s just a list of words on a frame.
