Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.
Back in the late 1970s I fell in love – with my flight instructor. I carry yet and still a deep and abiding affection for him even after his sudden passing a few years ago.
Jay was a natural when it came to flying planes. I remember a trip we took in a small 4-seater Cessna flying from Maryland down to the Florida Keys. The weather was sketchy when he filed the flight plan. As we flew down the Eastern Seaboard it worsened. But Jay was instrument-rated, he trusted the plane and I trusted him.
More importantly, we both trusted the air traffic controllers as we flew into and out of their air space: “Hello, Flight #. Goodby Flight #. Now handing you off to….” And so it went.
The night was black, rain lashed the windshield, lightning lit up the Florida Everglades below us, the tiny cabin was tense. In time, we landed. Just as Jay had intended.
To this day I think about the Great Air Traffic Controller in the sky – the one who hands me off angel to angel shepherding me through each challenge, each almost disaster. “Hello, Diane. Goodby Diane. Handing you off now….”
