Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily does of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.
Have you ever sent out a call for help to a friend or family member only to have them say, “Tie a knot in the end of your rope and hold on to that.”
It’s actually a good bit of help. Think about it: with enough rope to tie a know and enough strength to hang on you’ll probably be okay. But what if there’s nothing to hold on to?
I remember being on an Outward Bound mountaineering trip high in the Canadian Rockies with 5 other women. In pairs we were climbing up and then rappelling down the sheer face of a mountain. The guides were far above us, out of sight, and up over the cliff edge of the mountain where they had secured the ropes. With fear in her voice my partner called out: “I can’t find anything to hold on to.” Time passed. And then a voice from far above us replied, “Grab it with both hands……”
It works: when you can’t find anything to hold on to, grab it with both hands.
