Hello to you in Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds, your daily dose of hope, imagination, wisdom, stories, practical tips, and general riffing on this and that.

It must be close to 40 years now I left the East Coast and headed West to start a new life driving the Chevy Camaro  with the 350 V-8 engine straight shot across the country and then north into Monterey, California. My baby sister, Michele, rode shotgun. We can tell you that there is nothing flatter than the Midwest plains.

What kept the miles from driving us crazy? We’d stop at farm stands, buy bags of cherries to eat and then spit the cherry stones at the windshield hoping that the stone would drop into the space between the windshield and the dashboard before falling to the car floor. The one with the most stones on the car floor at the end of the day would win.

Here on Whidbey the cherry and peach stands have opened up. Summer fruit – like the season – may be fleeting; but our memories are long.
