Hello to you in Amarillo, Texas!

I’m enjoying the healthy benefits of steel cut oatmeal. The other morning I was reflecting on how the oatmeal got in my bowl.

I focused on the Prayer Before Eating to thank the earth, air, fire, water, and space for what each of these elements provided.

Next, I turned to the countless hands. Think about it: sowing and reaping the oats, processing, packaging, marketing, and shipping, trucks, trains, rail lines, fuel, warehouses, food markets, water lines, electricity, gas lines, the stove and cook pot, the wooden spoon to stir, the brightly painted ceramic bowl for serving, and we’ve not even gotten to the fruits, nuts, oils, seeds, dairy, or whatever else gets added to the oats.

It might look like food for breakfast; but in truth it’s a bowl of nature and humanity.
