In contemporary Buddhist practice, as derived from the Zen (and Theravādin) traditions by my teacher Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, a “gatha” is a verse usually recited mentally in rhythm with the breath as part of one’s daily mindfulness practice.
Here’s one for Waking Up:
Waking up this morning, I smile.
Twenty-four brand new hours are before me.
I vow to live fully in each moment
and to look at all beings with the eyes of compassion.
And here’s another for Walking Meditation:
The mind can go in a thousand directions.
But on this beautiful path, I walk in peace.
With each step, a gentle wind blows.
With each step, a flower blooms.
