Episode Notes
Hello, to you listening in Lewiston, Maine!
Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.
Maybe this has happened to you. You’re explaining your idea or making a point when someone says, “Yes, but …” How did you feel? Maybe discounted, defensive, invisible as if the speaker had a better idea or one of greater value.
“Yes, but” communicates judgment and negates what’s been said. “Yes, but” is heard as ‘instead of’ or ‘opposed to’. Even if our intention is to add our ideas, the speaker hears “but” which sends a critical response.
See what a difference it makes when we change one word to “Yes, and …” The entire communication dynamic shifts to being seen, heard, included, and valued. “Yes, and” says, ‘in addition’ and conveys a willingness to build on the speaker’s idea even though one might not necessarily agree with the speaker.
Practical Tip: When we consciously practice eliminating “Yes, but …” in favor of the more inclusive “Yes, and … ” we create powerfully collaborative communication!
